Dancing Vampires by Cornelia Amiri #HauntedHalloweenSpooktacular

Dracula and His Creator

You can never go wrong with a vampire costume for Halloween. It’s an all-time favorite. And the popular ones are always Draculaesque versions.

As writers and readers, let’s think about that for a moment. Bram Stoker died in April 1912, so, over a hundred years ago and his fictionalized character—Dracula—is still the most famous vampire in history. And there has been a lot of competition, especially in the 21st century—Wrath, Lestat, Bill Compton, Edward, the brothers: Stefan and Damon, as well as others.

So, why does this character, written over 100 years ago, still stand strong? He was villainous to the core, but we are still drawn to him. Why is that? What did Bram Stoker put into Dracula’s character work to make this monster tick? Did Bram put some of himself into Dracula? Do we see some of ourselves in the monster as well?

Let’s do a few comparisons between Bram and Drac.

Many Stoker biographers reported he died of syphilis. It’s easy to see the similarities between vampirism and a disease like syphilis and imagine the guilt and concern Bram was burdened with over possibly infecting his wife.

Bram Stoker married actress Florence Balcombe in 1878. She was previously engaged to Oscar Wilde. From all accounts, she and Bram shared a deep love for each other. We see those intense emotions written into Jonathan’s feelings for Mina.

Also, Bram Stoker tied his own Irish heritage into his character and the story. Since Dracula is Eastern European, you may not have noticed the author’s Celtic roots in the story, but I assure you they are there. Stoker actually wrote his first draft of Dracula while he was a guest at Slains. The Slain castle in Aberdeenshire Scotland, is often considered an inspiration for Dracula’s castle in the book.

On his mother’s side, Bram Stoker was a direct descendent of ’Manus O’Donnell (Manus ‘the Magnificent), the Irish clan chief, who led a rebellion against Henry VIII in the 16th century.

So, Dracula’s backstory of a man with a great past as a warrior and ruler, now displaced by the passage of history, living in the shadows, is also the backstory of Bram Stoker’s ancestry.

It has been said that as a little boy in Ireland, Bram Stoker’s mother often told him stories, including scary tales. They must have included Irish folk lore. There are many tales of dark vampiric fey in Celtic mythology. These dark fey are often extremely beautiful and seductive. The vampiric fey, the baobhan sith, always roamed together as sisters. In Dracula, Bram Stoker’s description of the three sisters in the vampire’s castle seems similar to dark Celtic fey.
Two were dark, and had high aquiline noses, like the Count, and great dark, piercing eyes that seemed to be almost red when contrasted with the pale yellow moon. The other was fair, as fair as can be, with great wavy masses of golden hair and eyes like pale sapphires. I seemed somehow to know her face, and to know it in connection with some dreamy fear, but I could not recollect at the moment how or where. All three had brilliant white teeth that shone like pearls against the ruby of their voluptuous lips. There was something about them that made me uneasy, some longing and, at the same time, some deadly fear. I felt in my heart a wicked, burning desire that they would kiss me with those red lips. It is not good to note this down, lest some day it should meet Mina’s eyes and cause her pain; but it is the truth. They whispered together, and then they all three laughed—such a silvery, musical laugh, but as hard as though the sound never could have come through the softness of human lips. It was like the intolerable, tingling sweetness of water-glasses when played on by a cunning hand. The fair girl shook her head coquettishly, and the other two urged her on. One said:“Go on! You are first, and we shall follow; yours is the right to begin.” The other added:“He is young and strong; there are kisses for us all.”

Because Bram Stoker pulled deep from within his own history and wrote emotion and human pain into his book, Dracula, we connect with the horrors he created. We can see bits of ourselves in the monster …and that is what makes Dracula the scariest of all.

Maybe this Halloween, I’ll go as a female version of Bram Stoker. I’ll have to get a fake beard and mustache and a short-straight-hair wig. The 1900s-style man’s suit and tie won’t be hard to find. No one will know who I’m supposed to be, but that might be the funnest part. I can take pictures with all the people dressed like vampires.

All the while, I’ll be quietly thinking, Bram, wherever your spirit is, I just want you to know your best written character is still alive and well. You did it. You achieved what all authors dream of. May he live on in our minds for centuries to come.

Have a fang-tastic Halloween everyone.

Remember when you were having the best day ever and, in a flash, it turned to the worse one?

Coming from the pub with your brothers, having a laugh, you see seven stunning women standing in the road. One starts dancing with you. Her sexy red fingernails turn to talons, and she shreds your back.

No? Maybe stuff like that just happens to me and my brothers… and a few other guys in the Scottish Highlands.

Ian’s right. I’m Sorcha, the one he danced with. My sisters and I are vampiric-fey. We were hunting men. But we only went after the McDuff brothers, a god, a bagpiper, an IT guy, and a steampunk musician. That’s it.

We decided to forget about drinking their blood and try loving them instead. But even with all the sizzling passion Ian and I and my sisters and their lovers have for each other… they’re obstacles to forbidden love.

Two big ones are:

The war goddess Morrigan. You do not want to make her mad.

And the Valkyries. Those you-know-what’s are bananas covered in nuts.

To find out if my sisters and I conquer them all and end up with the men we love, hit the Buy Now button above and come dance with the vampires.

“What?” Mordak asked. Me? Love a human? Of course not. “By the goddess, you’ve lost your minds. I just want this one’s blood for myself. Run along, get your own. We’ll meet at the portal before dawn.”
“See you back at the cairn.” Fuamnach tilted her chin in the air and vanished.
      Aithbhreac disappeared as well.
Mordak shifted her eyes back to the mortal. His mere presence commanded attention. What would be wrong with having a tryst with him? Goddess Morrigan has affairs with humans all the time.
I thought they’d never leave. She fixed her gaze on the tall, striking man, and swinging her hips in a saucy fashion, she sauntered toward him. As she “drew near him, she batted her eyelashes and flashed a smile to draw him in. Dancing with him would be even more fun than usual.
A noisy, whoosh-like, shaking sound caught her attention. What now? She gasped with shock. This cannot be.
Three women descended from the ebony sky with the wings on their bronze helmets flapping like a bird’s.
What is happening? She hadn’t drunk any heather ale today.
“The vanilla-blond women landed smoothly on their feet, the wings stopped flapping and laid back on their helmets, now totally still. All three women glared at her with glacier blue eyes.
Her palms were damp with sweat, she felt shaky. The earthly realm was such a crazy place. Why did she send her sisters away? She needed them now. Whoever or whatever these tall creatures in plate armor corselets, flimsy white skirts and fur-topped boots were, they weren’t smiling at her.
She noticed the human checking out the women from the rear and glancing at her as well. He had a huge grin on his face, as if his dreams had come true. Mordak, however, faced a nightmare.
The statuesque blonde in the center tilted her chin in the air. “The man is mine.”
“Yours?” Anger pulsated through Mordak’s body. “He’s not yours.”
People couldn’t just fly down from who knows where and claim the man she liked. Mordak schooled her face into composure and met the woman’s gaze. “Just who or what…are you?”
“Randgrid.” The tallest of the blondes didn’t break her stare, not even one blink. “I am a Valkyrie.”
With a thin, tight-lipped expression, she set her hand on her hip. “Be gone, baobhan sith.”
“Me. No, no…you’re the one in the wrong place.” Mordak shook her hand at the Valkyrie. “This is Scotland, not Denmark or Valhalla or wherever you think you are.”
“He’s a Gunn.” Randgrid jerked her head toward the man. “So, he is ours.”
“Of Clan Gunn?” She glared at the silly woman in the winged helmet. “The word clan is the whole point. He’s Scottish. He’s mine.”
Randgrid and her two sisters said together, “Gunn is the point. The descendant of a Viking hero is ours.”

I lay sleeping in the fetal position on the damp earthen floor of my cell as a hazy light filtered through the small windows. The clanking of heavy metal as a pair of large hairy hands unlocked the cage door brought me quickly to the alert.

My eyes had finally adjusted to the darkness and I was able to see a fair bit of my surroundings. I rose up slowly, staring in disbelief as an enormous man-wolf-like creature reached down and put both of his hairy hands under my arms. He picked me up off my feet as if I was nothing more than a rag doll and held me dangling in the air. Without warning, the creature slammed me down so hard I was sure my feet were going to be repositioned above my head. I was given only a brief moment of reprieve to catch my balance before I was pushed out of the cage.

Puffs of dank dust swirled around my head as I stumbled and landed on the dungeon floor. I was grateful for my martial arts training and my understanding of going with the motion instead of fighting it. Shifting my body, I spun back into a crouched balance. I had no idea what this creature planned on doing with me but I was determined to go down fighting. I wouldn’t make it easy for the ugly beast, you could bet money on that.

“I bet you are wondering how a damp, dusty basement of this nature can exist in the desert,” came a voice through the darkness. “You would be surprised what exists beyond your realms of reality.”

I spun toward the voice as Dumitru’s tall, well-built figure stepped out from the depths of the shadows. The favorite son of Wadim and his first wife -an Italian Countess who Wadim captured and turned vampire centuries ago- there was no guessing at his ancestry. His sharp, vampire features were accentuated by rich, thick, glistening black hair that was tied snuggly at the base of his neck. Taught muscles bulged beneath the flowing material of his linen shirt. The ruffles at the neck and cuffs seemed out of place on his lean, muscular body.

Although at first glance he looked Caucasian, as I looked more closely I could see his Asian ancestry; especially in his eyes.

“My father has many talents,” the newcomer said. A chuckle, that almost resembled a growl, oozed from his evil sneer. “Stand up!”

I rose slowly, rubbing my sore muscles absent mindedly as I did. Purple welts were beginning to form on my forearms from my encounter with the wolf-man.

“Wu’s star pupil is injured?” He said sarcastically. He reached out and grabbed my arm with such force I was hard pressed to keep my balance. “Well, we cannot have that. I want you in perfect form when we fight.”

I couldn’t hold back the gag reaction my body had from the putrid stench of flesh and blood on Dumitru’s breath ....

Book Description:

Gregorie Babin has existed in a gently lulling darkness for so long he’s not even sure he’s human anymore. Surrounded by four walls, without light or space in which to move, he has become what he envisions as a mollusk inside a shell. Is he alive or dead, or perhaps in some kind of purgatory or Hell? The answer lies in a past he no longer remembers. It is only when random forces break him out of this perpetual darkness that he can begin to know the devastating truth—and what it means for his future.

Written with the author’s signature talent for “psychological conflict . . . and emotional tension” (The Book Commentary), this is a speculative journey of a young man’s desperate desire to get back home to the ones he loves. Prepare to be captivated by a tale that tests the boundaries of your imagination and leaves you questioning the darkness that lies within us all.

He smelled something.

Offensive and yet desirable.

The terrible hunger returned, roiling through the whole of him like the brawny ocean crests that had thrust him onto the beach. The hunger demanded he move. He floundered on his side for a moment before righting himself and beginning a frantic, disjointed crawl: one foot dragging behind him, an elbow giving out. Every hinge in his body resisted, and the movement required complete concentration. All the while this unignorable “wanting” spun through him like a bear desperate to hunt and devour.

The scent grew potent as he neared the wood.

His ceaseless craving forced him to scrabble across a path of wooden planks that bridged over the dunes. A spigot at the top of this footbridge awaited, causing him to hesitate. Was it thirst that propelled him? Perhaps dehydration had driven him to near madness?

Since he was on all fours, he reached the fausset easily. Why it would be built out here and so near the ground, he didn’t know. The handle twisted after a brief struggle that hurt the bones of his palm. He set his open mouth below it and let the water flow, glugging and choking as he filled his body with liquid. Still, he experienced no satisfaction.

The wind changed direction and that same scent tempted him. He scuttled from the path and entered into the dark of the wood, mindless of the ground’s debris, the stabbing sticks and thorns penetrating the skin on his hands and knees. Moving forward like a dog led by its sniffing nose, he charged through, searching for the source of the strange, beguiling stench.

The hunt led him to a small horse—or no, not un cheval—stubby horns grew from the animal’s graceful head. A deer, lying on its side, its legs twisted beneath and blood coming from its—he pounced, the animal shuddering as his hands connected with its warm trunk and his mouth attached to its supple neck. His teeth penetrated the hide, though not without effort, and then a warm, metallic taste filled his mouth and that was all that mattered.

He fell back in ecstasy as his stomach softened and veins thrummed, his heart quivering with new life. He’d never consumed anything so soothing, so satisfying. His limbs warmed, the nourishment spreading, and his insides filled to bursting.

He rested on the ground beside the animal while it relaxed into its last breath.

Go with grace, he said in his mind.

We’re moving. The home we’re leaving was built in 1907, on the site of a house that had previously burned down. Designed by the local brickyard, which shipped hundreds of copies across the midwest as a complete home-building kit, it started life as a showroom, became part of a working farm, passed through the hands of several families, and had a brief stint as a meth lab, requiring extensive refurbishment before it could become a single family rental home.

At some point during the refurbishment, the owner decided to take a metal detector for a spin. She found what she described as, “An old locket with a bunch of hair in it.” I asked if she reburied that locket, but as a medium who’d already been living in the house for several years at that point, I knew that she hadn’t.

If she had reburied the locket, maybe we wouldn’t come home to an empty house with every cupboard wide open. Maybe the bare, disembodied legs of a young girl in a gingham skirt wouldn’t jump playfully over the landing at the top of the stairs. It’s possible that the grandfather clock--which we do not own and which is not present in the house--wouldn’t tick quite so loudly.

Keeping dog sitters has been an issue. A young couple who enthusiastically loved our animals said, “Never again,” once they’d had to be in the place alone. Another found one of our dogs trapped in a closet--something that had never occurred before--and yet another sent me a picture of the Addams Family’s house, stating, “I’m going to tell my kids this is where you lived.”

It isn’t a malicious haunting. We’ve never felt unsafe. Creeped out, maybe, when the back door has automatically opened for us when our car pulled into the driveway. Freaked by the footsteps heard in unoccupied rooms, sure. And the little girl’s legs? Always a bit jarring. But after a while, one grows used to catching shadowy figures out of the corner of one’s eye. And the back door thing? That could actually be helpful when one’s hands are full.

The townhouse we’re moving to is a little over twenty years old. There has never been a recorded death in it. It isn’t built on the site of a tragedy (that we’re aware of), and the scariest thing about it is that I’ll have to negotiate two flights of stairs to get from my bed to my office, rather than just one. But I wonder, will I miss living in such a benignly haunted place? Will it feel empty? Lonely?

I look forward to the cupboard doors staying shut, though.

How about you? Do you have any spooky stories from past houses?

Humans imagine scenes in movies where werewolves scream in agony and tear out of their clothes, which I’ve never understood. We know when the full moon is. It doesn’t take us by surprise. And we know how to dress for it.

Or undress. My breath freezes in my lungs as Nathan walks into the circle. He stops in front of the monolith to Lycaon and drops his robe.

I shamelessly look him over, the way he did to me, from his broad shoulders, down his chest dusted with dark hair that thins to a line on his shockingly sculpted abs. I wasn’t expecting him to look as good as he does. I wasn’t expecting that my mouth would water at the sight of his cock, that my thighs would clench together at the thought of how huge it must be hard.

I wish he could see me. I hope he feels me, smells me.

And I hope that the strange attraction between us is making him as crazed with need as I feel.

An acolyte—a thrall trained in our ceremonies and rituals—steps forward with a shallow silver bowl bearing a glistening human heart. It’s required for the transformation; Lycaon himself was transformed into a wolf after he angered Zeus by feeding the God human flesh. Nathan grabs the heart with his bare hand and bites into it.

That’s when he lifts his gaze and finds me, seconds before the transformation starts.

It begins with his eyes. They flash silver, then red. His face shifts, nose and jaw elongating into a muzzle. We don’t turn into wolves. That’s a myth. We turn into a creature that stands upright; body covered with short, silky hair from our clawed feet to our canine-like heads. The fur flows over every contour of Nathan’s body and his spine curves, drawing him into a hunched posture. His ears elongate, pointing straight back, a shape humans would consider more elfin than dog-like, with tufts of fur accentuating the points. His arms grow longer, as well; in this predatory manifestation, a wide reach is an advantage.

In his animalistic form, he waits for the others but stares up at me. Like this, I’m vulnerable. Far too human. I would be no match for him, should he want me. And he does want me, but even this way, he has self-control, as well as some common sense. He knows he can’t reach me, and so do I, but being the target of all that concentrated power and bestial drive is still heady and frightening.

The good kind of frightening. The kind that makes me wonder what could happen if I only push a little further.

Author Interview- Pariah’s Lament by Richie Billing #EpicFantasy

Hello Richie, welcome to Paranormalists!

Hello and thank you very much for hosting me on your fantastic blog! It’s a real privilege to share this space with yourself and your followers.

Let's get started. What is your “day” job if you are not a full-time author?

I worked as a lawyer for a few years, got fed up of that and quit to pursue writing full-time. But I quickly ran out of cash so took a job managing an Irish bar. That was a lot of fun (for a few years at least) and I met some great people, but it was demanding and ironically unsociable so I went back to the 9-5 grind and wound up in digital marketing.

Now I’m currently Head of SEO for an agency. It’s a job that involves a lot of writing, editing and analysing, but it’s fun and involves some of the things I love—writing and editing. Plus, the SEO knowledge has helped with my author website!

If you wrote a book about your life what would the title be?

An Inconsistent Man

What is the hardest thing about being an author?

Writing when you really don’t want to. But sometimes, when you force yourself to do it, you end up having some of your most productive sessions. It just proves that you can do it. And also that you should do it, because it’s a bit of a high you feel after getting those words out and on the page.

Also, the forever-present and crippling self-doubt.

What is the best thing about being an author?

Creating things and seeing other people enjoy them. That’s what motivates me anyway. One of the reasons I decided to try writing was after having a string of amazing experiences with books. At a time in my life when I felt pretty lost, I escaped into books. The authors and the stories they weaved helped me an awful lot, not to mention entertained me in ways I’d not experienced since I was a kid reading Harry Potter.

To attempt to give back the gift that books have given me to other people is a truly special thing. Definitely the best part.

Have you ever been star struck by meeting one of your favorite authors? If so who was it?

I once met Adrian Tchaikovsky at the bar at Fantasycon and was very much star struck. Unfortunately, it was off the back end of a Covid lockdown so everyone was masked up. I could barely understand him and he could hardly understand me—my Scouse accent didn’t help either. But he was a really lovely guy, and we ended up speaking properly a few months later after I stumped up the courage to ask him to guest on my podcast (The Fantasy Writers’ Toolshed, for curious minds).

In contrast, Raymond E Feist is one of my favourite authors—I’ve read all of Riftwar—and I met him for a book signing after an event he held in Liverpool. Unfortunately, he was turned away from me, talking to someone else the whole time he was signing my book so I never got to speak to him. I found the whole experience a bit rude. It taught me a lesson though—never, ever take your fans for granted.

What book changed your life?

A Storm Of Swords by George RR Martin. This was one of the books I referred to above as one that enraptured me at a time I very much needed perking up. No book has ever absorbed me as much as this.

One night I was struggling to sleep, so picked it up about 1am and started reading. When next I checked the time it was 7am. I’ve never experienced the passage of time like that when reading a book before. It was a bit magical.

What were some of your favorite books growing up?

I remember a few books and series that really struck a chord with me at different stages of my life. When I was very young I remember loving the Artemis Fowl books, which were very much adventure-based stories. I also liked A Series Of Unfortunate Events quite a lot too (bit morbid).

Later on I got into Harry Potter. I was around ten or eleven when the first film came out, so the books were everywhere too. And back then I found them utterly engrossing. I’d lie on my bed for hours reading away.

After that I remember reading The Hobbit which was an adventure on a whole new level, and then around the same time the Lord of the Rings movies came out. That just hooked me completely and is probably where my preference for fantasy stems from.

What books are currently in your to be read pile?

I’m very much a mood reader and like to read a mix of books at the same time. I’ve just got The Coward by Stephen Aryan which I’m looking forward to getting stuck into. His new book, The Judas Blossom, is excellent. I’ve also got The Bone Roots by Gabriela Houston lined up to read too. Also in the mix is a book by Greek philosopher Epicurus called The Art of Happiness. He’s grabbed my attention an awful lot lately so I’m hoping to learn a lot.

Which do you prefer ebooks, print, or audio books?

I think each one has their own charm. My favourite reading experience is sitting down in a chair you can sink into with a paperback. I love reading on the go though and read a lot of ebooks on my phone. And when I’m on long drives I like to throw an audiobook on.

If you could live inside the world of a book or series which world would it be and why?

I had to have a good think about this one, but I decided it would be Middle Earth. I’ve always wanted to go to New Zealand to do the LOTR tour so I figured I’d like to visit the world too.
Although there are some scary bastards there, orcs, goblins and Shelob in particular, there are some truly amazing things too. And it’s a land with magic in the air, with trees that can talk and move. To be honest, I think I’d spend most of my time in Hobbiton stuffing my face or hanging out with the ents in the forest.

Book Description:

When an attempt is made on the life of Ashara, Keeper of Yurr, his young, hapless advisor Edvar must uncover and stop those behind it.

With enemies in the capital city and the belligerent Tesh, Keeper of neighbouring nation Karrabar stirring trouble in the Borderlands, can Edvar hold together Ashara's brittle reign?

The troubles ripple throughout Yurr, affecting an ancient race of people known as the Amast, who in their time of utmost need, turn to pariah Isy for salvation. Rejected by society, kith and kin, can Isy guide the Amast to safety during the greatest turmoil Yurr has known since the War of the Damned?

Pariah's Lament will take you on a rollercoaster of an adventure ‘that will keep you spellbound as you traverse the world alongside Isy and Edvar’ (Books Behind The Title). And along the way you’ll experience ‘intense fighting scenes, a little romance and flawed characters’ (Sarah Lillian Books).

If you love to explore fantasy worlds, this book won’t disappoint. Part of a shared universe populated by other authors, the setting in Pariah’s Lament has proven a huge hit with readers, with some praising the ‘insane level of detail’ (The Book Suite) and vividness of its descriptions.

Excerpt:

Like a flock of dive-bombing gulls, the great stones of the Yurrish trebuchets and catapults twisted and turned in the air. One jagged chunk struck the bow of a Karraban galley and splinters and shards burst forth to a chorus of cracks and screams. Another great boulder obliterated the masthead of a nearby ship, hurling those upon the deck overboard.
More missed than struck. The yellow tide did not falter.

Driven forward by oars, the Karraban fleet ate up the water, moving in a diagonal line. The trebuchets were taking an age to reload. From his vantage point, Jem could see those on the quay hurrying to winch back the catapults. At the sound of a frantic horn, the arms of the catapults were unleashed and clusters of iron balls, stones and rocks rained down on those ships leading the Karraban charge, puncturing hulls, sails and decks.

Still they came.

The trebuchets, ranges adjusted, loosed again and once more struck a destructive blow. The Karrabans still persisted. Yurrish archers upon the quay walls unleashed their first volley. Unfortunate rowers upon the open decks screamed, and the momentum of a number of ships waned, oars falling slack or tangling with others. One talented, or lucky, archer struck a helmsman and the galley veered into another, scraping its side and snapping its oars, and, no doubt, the arms of a few oarsmen too.

The Karrabans answered with arrows of their own, their archers placed in crow’s nests and platforms built amongst the rigging. The air quickly grew thick with darts. The persistent shouts and cries of men were incrementally drowned out by the great crashes of stone against wood as the loads of catapults and trebuchets fell. The frenetic scene around the quay wall absorbed Jem’s attention. Creeping into the top of his vision, looming behind the chaos, came the first of the great galleons. Its rowers slowed, turned portside, level with the quay gate.

"Sir, the galleon carries the thunder. You must stop it!" Jem shouted.

Gundar looked to where he pointed and nodded. He dispatched messengers to the quay and artillery stations. Jem spotted hatches opening on the portside of the ship. Catapults continued to fire at the galleys, though some quick-thinking engineers had turned their aim to the galleon.

Their loads fell short. The trebuchets were still reloading. They were the only ones who had a hope of hitting it, if any of their operators had the presence of mind to know where to aim.

One by one, their great wooden arms swung forwards. Huge rocks hung in the air like eagles.

Everyone upon the wall had their eyes upon them, hoping they struck, willing them to do so, and despairing as they watched each one splash harmlessly into the water.

Excerpt
