Zachary Phillips, the main character in the book has a backstory to his upbringing that I didn’t elaborate on.
He spent most of his time with his mother whilst his father was away for work, however, she didn’t treat him very well. She verbally put him down, and yet he kept trying to gain her love and respect.
It was a cycle that was infuriating her and breaking him. The strain in their relationship is evident at the beginning of the book, and even on her deathbed. It was as if nothing was good enough for her.
It pains him, that he needs to let his mother go however she also never gave him the time and love that he believed he deserved as a son. In truth, Zachary missed his father the most and wished that he were at home more often to lessen the abuse of his mother and him battling loneliness.

I give her another
