Excerpt 2:
He burst in and examined the spacious room. He sniffed and smelled it—a fragrance. Familiar, yet unlike anything he’d ever scented, and magnificent.
“Hey? You awake? Are you gonna search the room or stand there and daydream?”
The plan had been for him to search while Jacob stood guard, but that aroma distracted him. He shook his head to focus his thoughts. In the middle of the bed on top of the comforter, an indentation, like someone had lain there. He sent a silent prayer hoping the Malums hadn’t gotten to her before them as he strode down a hall and parted a door. That smell was there too. Fighting to ignore it, he took in the vanity, toilet, shower, and tub. Then he backtracked, opened a set of double doors leading into a closet, and found a mannequin wearing a white, long dress. That scent now stronger. Walking farther inside, he froze.
In the far corner, a petite brunette sat on the carpeted floor cradling her legs. Her face buried in her knees.
He took a breath. That scent infiltrated his senses yet again, the fragrance much more powerful than it’d been seconds before.
His stomach knotted. His heart squeezed in his chest.
He couldn’t explain his reaction. He didn’t have time to think about it either. Swallowing, he closed the distance between himself and the woman. “Jocelyn. I’m Landon. Your sister sent me.”
Her head shot up, and her gaze met his, sealing his fate. The most beautiful woman he’d ever seen: long golden-brown hair, chocolate colored eyes, pouty lips.
His pulse spiked as his heart thundered, pounding louder and louder until it was all he heard. Then it all faded. The walls, the floor, everything except her. Heat hit his chest and spread through his body. His legs buckled, making him fall hard on his knees. Canines elongating, he shut his mouth and eyes, knowing they were no longer their normal blue shade but an incandescent yellow, golden color. He couldn’t see anything but her, though he kept his eyes closed. He couldn’t rationalize fully or at all, but he knew.
He’d found her—his fated female.
He couldn’t have her, but he wanted her. He’d never have her, but if he could change fate, he wouldn’t. He loved she was his.
