Book Description:

A voice has echoed in seventeen-year-old Vivian Frost’s head for years, tormenting her at every turn. While the therapists say it’s a coping mechanism and the nuns sing a far more sinister tune, Vivian just wants to believe it out of existence. When she wakes from a nightmare in excruciating pain, she’s left with three haunting words and no way out.

Something that laid dormant inside her for years is threatening to claw itself out, and change her forever.

Will Vivian be able to rise above her limits, or will this inner darkness win?

Excerpt:
"Lie."
"Of course, I don't hear the voice anymore, Dr. Wilson," I said. She sat across from me studying my expressions thoroughly, as though she's trying to find some micro-expression to tell her otherwise. When she didn't find one, she nodded slowly before smiling.
"That's wonderful to hear. Are you excited about the move tomorrow?"
No. Not really. I didn't want to deal with a whole new school in the middle of nowhere. I didn't want to travel hours to get there either. However, it wasn't my choice. It was never my choice.
I forced a smile. "Yes. This will be a nice change."
She sucked her teeth in sympathy. I hated when she did that. "I understand, dear. It will be better in a place that doesn't know." Dr. Wilson said. Actually, I hated her sometimes. I knew exactly what she was inferring. A few months ago, I had a freak-out that cost me the group I associated with. Then, rumors spread around the school that I was a freak. No one wanted to be friends with a freak.
Yes, it’s true, I am a freak, but only I can call myself one. When I call myself a freak, I know it is almost like an endearment. They, on the other hand, said it out of maliciousness and contempt. There, people didn't like weird or things they couldn't explain, and I happened to be one of those things.
"Yeah, I hope so," I said.
"How are things with your dad?" She asked, trying to change the subject to a lighter one.
Joke’s on her, it was just as heavy of a topic.
"Great," I said with another fake smile. It was not great. Technically, he’s my adoptive dad. Ben and Emma Frost adopted me when I was nine. I was so excited to be a part of a family that I ignored the signs at first. They adopted me to fill the void their stillborn created. Well, rather Emma adopted me for that reason. Ben adopted me to keep his wife happy. He never treated me like a daughter; he viewed me as a charge at most. Lately, we fight over everything. Emma brought it up to Dr. Wilson at the end of the last session, so it was an unavoidable topic in this one.
Dr. Wilson smiled softly, "That's good." She then took a sip of her steaming cup of coffee while I bit my nails. "Are you nervous?" She quickly asked.
"Kind of."
"You know I could recommend a therapist in Burlington."
No. I couldn't do this again. I couldn't pretend to be happy to a professional anymore. I couldn't handle the awkward conversations where I obviously need help but they are trying to direct the conversation to a topic my parents think is what is wrong with me rather than what is wrong with me.
"I think I'm fine now. I've been doing good off my medication, and I have not had an episode in months." I said with as much strength as I could muster. "If I feel myself getting bad again, I can always reach out."
Dr. Wilson glanced at her wristwatch and smiled. "Well then, Vivian. I am glad to have met and worked with you. Can I give you my email in case you do want to reach out for a recommendation?"
"Of course," I said. She handed me her business card, and I pocketed it. "Thank you for all your help," I uttered before walking out. In the lobby, Emma was flipping through a magazine. She didn't spot me at first, but that's typical. She was always stuck in her own head. I can tell this past month has been tough on her because her eyes had deep bags, and her frown lines were more defined. I cleared my throat, startling her.
"How'd it go, Hon?" She asked with a smile when she realized it was just me. I could read between the lines; she was asking me if it's over.
"Great. I'm ready for the move." I smiled back at her. I couldn't fake one, not for her. Emma's always so sweet to me. She made me laugh without meaning to. Sometimes I wished she is my real mother, but then I think about her husband, and I'm glad that’s not the case.
"Let's go home, you still have to make sure you pack everything. We can't come back if you forget!" She said. I didn't have a lot, but I always made sure to only keep the necessities. Just in case. I wouldn't forget anything, but I was going keep it to myself.

Jo Schaffer

Genre: Historical Fiction

Publisher: Month9Books

Date of Publication: May 15, 2018

ISBN: 978-1946700650
ASIN: B07982QYX4

Number of pages: 280

Cover Artist: AM Design Studios

Book Description:

A great depression grips the city of St. Louis in 1934. Stanley, an orphaned newsy, lives in a poor part of town hit especially hard by the economic downturn. One night, Stanley runs into Hazel, a restless debutante-in-waiting who has begun to question her posh lifestyle in the midst of the suffering she sees. She’s out and about without an escort and against her father’s wishes.

When they discover the body of a girl with her head bashed in by a baseball bat, the very different and separate realities of the two teens inform their decision. Together they will figure out what happened to her and bring those responsible to justice.

But getting involved with each other and digging into the secrets behind this murder earns them some powerful enemies, including a secret group seeking to rid society of all they deem “undesirable.” They’ve put into motion “The Winnowing,” a plan seeking to take over the city and enforce their will.

As Stanley and Hazel’s forbidden feelings for one another grow, their investigation turns deadly. Now, it is up to Stanley and his gang of street kids to stop Hazel from becoming the next victim.

Excerpt:

Hazel stumbled down the grassy hill of the moonlit park. Stanley glanced at her from several steps ahead. “You with me, Bananas?”
“Yeah.” She swallowed back the urge to be sick. Hazel’s legs moved her forward but nothing seemed real. She was in Forest Park at night with a newsie boy she’d just met and Sandy’s runaway sister was back there, slumped against the statue of St. Louis with her head cracked open.

She couldn’t make her brain take it all in. Evelyn’s face—caved in on one side, her mouth slack, teeth showing like gravestones covered in blood. Gripped with panic, Hazel quickened her step to catch up with Stanley—her only guide in this darkness. He was a part of it. This was his world, not hers.

Excerpt 2:
He burst in and examined the spacious room. He sniffed and smelled it—a fragrance. Familiar, yet unlike anything he’d ever scented, and magnificent.
“Hey? You awake? Are you gonna search the room or stand there and daydream?”
The plan had been for him to search while Jacob stood guard, but that aroma distracted him. He shook his head to focus his thoughts. In the middle of the bed on top of the comforter, an indentation, like someone had lain there. He sent a silent prayer hoping the Malums hadn’t gotten to her before them as he strode down a hall and parted a door. That smell was there too. Fighting to ignore it, he took in the vanity, toilet, shower, and tub. Then he backtracked, opened a set of double doors leading into a closet, and found a mannequin wearing a white, long dress. That scent now stronger. Walking farther inside, he froze.
In the far corner, a petite brunette sat on the carpeted floor cradling her legs. Her face buried in her knees.
He took a breath. That scent infiltrated his senses yet again, the fragrance much more powerful than it’d been seconds before.
His stomach knotted. His heart squeezed in his chest.
He couldn’t explain his reaction. He didn’t have time to think about it either. Swallowing, he closed the distance between himself and the woman. “Jocelyn. I’m Landon. Your sister sent me.”
Her head shot up, and her gaze met his, sealing his fate. The most beautiful woman he’d ever seen: long golden-brown hair, chocolate colored eyes, pouty lips.
His pulse spiked as his heart thundered, pounding louder and louder until it was all he heard. Then it all faded. The walls, the floor, everything except her. Heat hit his chest and spread through his body. His legs buckled, making him fall hard on his knees. Canines elongating, he shut his mouth and eyes, knowing they were no longer their normal blue shade but an incandescent yellow, golden color. He couldn’t see anything but her, though he kept his eyes closed. He couldn’t rationalize fully or at all, but he knew.
He’d found her—his fated female.
He couldn’t have her, but he wanted her. He’d never have her, but if he could change fate, he wouldn’t. He loved she was his.

Genre: Paranormal Mystery

Publisher: Limitless Publishing

Date of Publication: 2/12/2019

Number of pages: 337
Word Count: 78500

Tagline: Some secrets are meant to stay buried.

Book Description

My job? I hunt ghosts. Not to prove they exist—because I already know they do—but to figure out why they’re still here.

My first big case leads me to a mansion on the Chicago Gold Coast, the previous home of a wealthy socialite who lived there until she accidentally fell to her death in 1927.

I’ve never been this determined—and excited—to solve a case like this one before. Pity I’m forced to work alongside a man whose sole purpose is to debunk paranormal activity. But the worst part? He’s gorgeous, and the more we work together, the more I realize I might be falling for him.

Together we’re delving deeper and deeper into the spiritual world. But the more secrets we uncover, the more pissed off these ghosts become; and that’s when I start to realize…we might be in way over our heads.

Excerpt:

His gaze settled on her half-smile. “At least it won’t be boring.”
Her heart did a somersault. “Yeah, I don’t do well with boring.”
Feeling brazen, she leaned over and planted a quick kiss on his mouth. His eyes widened in surprise, and Trudy jumped up, grinning from ear to ear.
“Let’s go, Mr. Young. They’re probably wondering what’s happened to us.” She was halfway out the door.
Jason grabbed her hand before she could reach the hall and spun her around. His lips claimed hers before she could grasp what was happening. Trudy felt his hand on the small of her back molding her to him, while his other hand gently held her head. She felt a thrill like never before, and just as her knees started to give out, he released her.
“Better hurry, Gertrude. Wouldn’t want anyone to think you were trying to take advantage of me in this here grand bedroom.” He smiled into her eyes, and once again she was lost. She shook her head to clear it and get some control of her senses.
“We better go, or I’ll be taking advantage of you.” She laughed, and he did too. She loved the sound of it. She glanced over her shoulder. “I hope that damned camera of yours was turned off.”

As they headed out the door, Jason walking just behind her, he grimaced when he saw the red light on the camera on and grunted, “Oh, shit.”

Excerpt 2:
I spun, my tail knocking people across the room to snarl at my father. My wing descended to protect Evanora. There was no way anyone was taking her, they’d have to go through me first. I crouched low to pounce. Andreas studied my reaction to the threat, his eyes widening at all the revelations today.
Evanora squirmed from under my wing and stood in front of me, her hand on my chest. “I think I can handle this.” She prowled in front of me like a threatened tigress protecting her mate.
She snapped her fingers, and the elders levitated above the stage. Her right arm flung high in the air, and the emerald guards flew across the room by an invisible wind that herded them all in the corner beside Ruben.
Several of them tried to run, but the golden dragons cut off their escape route. A few emerald guards transformed into their dragons. Ruben leapt on one, his talons tearing through its protective scales as if they were nothing more than fine silk. His teeth tore the throat out of another.
A green dragon launched itself towards Evanora, and I pounced on it. My talons eviscerated it, his flesh steaming from the toxin Evanora had infused there to fight against the krakens. I’d never killed another Gaian—until recently I would have believed it was blasphemy—yet I never gave it a second thought because he had attacked my mate.
Ruben advanced on the others with murder in his amber gaze. They had attacked his mate, and I had no doubt every single emerald guard would suffer the force of his wrath for their actions. Panicked energy filled the air, and screams followed as more dragons emerged to try and fly to the doors at the top of the staircase. Some used their talons to climb the walls.
Ruben didn’t miss a beat. He rained fire on them, turning them all into heaps of steaming ash. The ferocious heat permeated the room, and every Gaian took a step back from the black death dragon.
The smell turned my stomach, and I tried not to breathe to limit my exposure to it. The cooking flesh reminded me of a dark fae party where they roasted whole pigs over open fires. Suddenly, turning vegetarian seemed like a good idea.
“You!” Evanora’s finger pointed directly at Cyrus. “Are a monster from the depths of hell.” She took slow deliberate steps towards him.
He swallowed and furtively looked to the side, taking a few steps back. The coward was searching for somewhere to escape to. He tried to lift his foot, but he seemed to be stuck where he stood. Apparently, he could only be brave if he had his women helpless due to a dragon suppressing collar.
Sensing the situation was under control, I returned to my human form. Ruben appeared at my side. He snapped his fingers, and we were both clothed in black.
With each flick of her wrist, lashes appeared on Cyrus’ body until he fell to his knees, his clothes in tatters. Evanora rubbed her hands together in a circular motion. His skin began to melt and peel down his body like a candle under the intensity of her stare.
“Even as you forgot them, I remember every one of their names, every terrified young girl you tried to impregnate with your evil spawn. Cyrus of the green dragons, I curse you from this day hence. You shall not rest in the afterlife but spend eternity in the realms of purgatory to experience the pain and suffering you have caused to others. Their agony will be yours, your body violated with their rapes, their torment only yours to bear.”
A BOOM shook the chamber, forming a crack across the ceiling. Wails sounded all around us before a black shimmering vortex appeared behind Cyrus. Shadow hands grasped his limbs and dragged him screaming into the darkness.
Stunned silence filled the room. Ruben’s hand grasped my arm, his eyes wide in alarm at what we’d just witnessed.
Evanora dusted her hands off and placed them on her hips. “Now what should I do with the elders who sanction rape, torture, and murder?”
Fuck that I was annoyed with her. I’d never seen anything more magnificent than Evanora go on a murderous spree. Her hair had a life of its own, moving around her as magic coursed through her. She took beauty into a different league.
I wanted her more now than ever before. She no longer looked frail and ready to break; her curves were accentuated in the deep purple gown that hugged every inch of her. When she released her magic, I swore I could see dark writing under her pale skin.
Evanora clicked her fingers, and the elders dropped to the ground, scrambling to get back on their feet. She chanted words from an ancient language that I didn’t understand. Energy pulsed towards the stage from the four directions of the wind, which Evanora summoned.
“Your dragons are bound inside you, unable to be released until the day you prove yourselves worthy to be a Gaian once more. You are nothing more than human, trapped in a realm that you can no longer leave,” she said. Her voice sounded remote and devoid of emotion.
Magic manifested in the air in a green mist. It twisted and swirled around the elders, stripping away their elder marks from their wrists. Evanora stalked through them, examining every single one of them until she seemed happy that they were bound by her enchantment.
“Next time you consider touching my mate, I would think again,” she hissed at them before strutting down from the stage. I’d never been more turned on in my life from her display of dominance.
“It’s time to go home.” Evanora opened a portal, indicating that Ruben and Justus leave through it.
My eyes met Andreas’. He nodded to let me know he would take care of everything.
Evanora grabbed my hand, and the world tilted off its axis for a few seconds before we re-materialised in my house.
