Hex and the Single Witch is free for your Kindle Dec 20-22 at Amazon

Hex and the Single Witch is free for your Kindle Dec 20-22 at Amazon

Please spread the word so everyone can get their free copy

Hex and the Single Witch
Vehicle City Vampires Book One
By Roxanne Rhoads

Anwyn Rose is descended from a long line of powerful witches yet she can barely cast spells young witchlings have mastered. She has one functioning witch gift, the power of knowing, which she puts to good use as a Detective on Flint’s Preternatural Investigation Team (aka the P.I.T. Crew)

It’s a new era in Vehicle City, supernaturals are running the town.

The P.I.T has their hands full with paranormal crimes. Top priority is a serial killer, who appears to be a vampire, draining young women in the city.

Anwyn is on the case with her sexy partner Detective Mike Malone.
Complicating things is her relationship Galen, a vampire who looks more guilty than innocent, although Anwyn trusts her instincts even if her power is on the fritz.

Mysterious spells, compromising situations, and a possible demon on the loose make it hard to focus on the case, but Anwyn has to make things right before the human police execute the wrong vampire.

Hex and the Single Witch contains magick, a little bit of mystery, a lot of supernatural mayhem, and a sexy love triangle that will leave you wanting more.

What Kings Ate and Wizards Drank now available

For the love of all that is holy, wait until next month to buy it. If I sell too many copies this month, I lose a bet and will have to post a video of me singing on Youtube. No one wants that.
Of course, the only place you buy it right now is  Amazon (more distributors to come over the weekend and next week) Looking for info on the print books and autographed copies? Click here for details!
P. S. Seriously, I’m very grateful for everyone’s support and interest in this book. So, go ahead, buy a copy. My pride can take the hit.
P.P.S. What is this bet all about? One night, after having my second glass of wine on an empty stomach and suffering mid-book depression, I was whining to author Debora Geary that I really hoped What Kings Ate sold at least 175 copies by the first royalty payment so that I could afford to take a university course that I had to cancel due to funds.
She laughed at me (because she is a mean, horrible person) and said I’d sell more than 175 Amazon ebook copies in my first month. I laughed and said if I sold that many, I’d sing You Are My Sunshine and dedicate it to her.
Um, oops.
So after I sobered up enough to realize what I’d just done, there was no backing out of it. Also, I hadn’t realized that she was going to tell everyone she knew about this. (Did I mention how she is a mean, horrible person?) So there you have it.
175 e-copies = me singing You Are My Sunshine posted on Youtube.
Ye gods.

Zombie Halloween Contest!

Are you celebrating Halloween?

I'll be spending the holiday fending off the brain eating zombies and blood sucking vampires that live on a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  Okay, they will really just be kids in costumes . . . unless a magical witches spell transforms them into the living dead!

In honor of Samhain, I'm giving away a copy of my newest novel NO BRAINER.

Grace Jones is a government-employed zombie killer. As a member of the elite Zombie Investigative Agency, she spends her days ridding the world of lower zombies. Her nine-to-five gig is turned upside down when she's assigned to investigate the zombie mafia's Red Brain Project. One of the members of her team is an ex-lover and the other is a zombie.

Ethan Waters is a zombie. Different from the brain-sucking and savage lower zombies, Ethan lives the more sophisticated life of an upper zombie. Ethan turns out to be the perfect compassionate foil to Grace's often emotionless slayer. Together Ethan and Grace battle the zombie mafia, have hot sex, and also find love.

ALERT:  NO BRAINER is an erotic romance (cuz that's what I write)!

Leave a comment (and email address) on my blog here with your creepiest yet sexiest 2-3 sentence Halloween tale for a chance to win!

And watch out for the zombies and vampires roaming your streets at night!!

Backlist Paranormal Romances now on Amazon

Three down, one to go! As many know, Aspen Mountain Press closed doors last year. I had my paranormal romances there. It took me a while to get motivated to format them, plus two were in a publisher generated series(Del Fantasma) and all those references had to go. I have three up, and am working to get the last Del Fantasma edited into the Encanto Bay series. Still, it feels great to have them out in the world again!

Retelling Grimm

The Twelve Dancing, Zombie-Kiling Princesses is a fast, fun read that's a futuristic take on one of my favorite Grimm fairy tales, The Twelve Dancing Princesses. If you're not familiar with this particular Grimm story, you can check it out here. But while the original version contained no zombies, I wanted to give it a modern twist.

I had thought of subbing the novella around, but after finding this image, it was too perfect to pass on.

The Twelve Dancing Zombie-Killing Princesses is available at Amazon and Smashwords.

Here's the blurb:

Meilin’s never believed in fairy tales. Happy ever afters might have happened in the old days – before zombies. But this is 2089, and the zombies beyond City are nothing like the ones your parents warned you about.
When their father promises riches to the one who can rid their city of zombies, the twelve King sisters rush to develop a solution that won’t bankrupt Dad.
The war overseas left Will disillusioned, but fighting zombies at home is a cause he can embrace. Meilin’s another. Tough but sweet, she might make him believe in life again, and maybe even love, if she doesn’t kick his ass first.
When zombies kidnap her family, Meilin must rescue them. But can she and Will save them from the worst fate of all?

What's your favorite Grimm's Fairy Tale? Are you addicted to the TV series Grimm like me?

What Kings Ate - A Writer's Guide & Food Lover's Comedy

My upcoming non-fiction book, WHAT KINGS ATE AND WIZARDS DRANK, will be out November 1. I just got the cover and the back-of-the-book blurb AND table of contents all organized so wanted to let everyone know about it.

Equal parts writer’s guide, comedy, and historical cookbook, fantasy author Krista D. Ball takes readers on a journey into the depths of epic fantasy’s obsession with rabbit stew and teaches them how to catch the blasted creatures, how to move armies across enemy territories without anyone starving to death, and what a medieval pantry should look like when your heroine is seducing the hero.

Learn how long to cook a salted cow tongue, how best to serve salt fish, what a “brewis” is (hint: it isn’t beer), how an airship captain would make breakfast, how to preserve just about anything, and why those dairy maids all have ample hips.

What Kings Ate will give writers of historical and fantastical genres the tools to create new conflicts in their stories, as well as add authenticity to their worlds, all the while giving food history lovers a taste of the past with original recipes and historical notes.

WHAT KINGS ATE will be available November 1 (though we are trying very, very hard to get it out earlier due to the overwhelming interest in the project). The ebook will be available everywhere for $7.99 and print book in Canada & US for ~$17 (I'm not sure when overseas listings will go alive).

If you’d like to know when the book comes out, make sure to sign up for the update emails here: http://kristadball.com/contact/new-release-sign-up/

Halloween in July

Hey, why not? Aren't you tired of Christmas in July? It's time for another holiday. :) With a treat!

Today through Sunday, you can download my paranormal ghost story, In the Midnight Hour, free from Amazon.

If you don't own a Kindle, you can still read it on your computer using the free app. So don't miss out!

To get you in the mood, how about a ghost story? "Intelligent" hauntings, in which the spirits interact with the living, are reportedly rare, but not in Gettysburg. You can find dozens of accounts of such interactions - visitors recording Q&A sessions where they hear the dead person's responses only during playback, soldiers who appear quite alive walking up to park visitors and handing them objects (which later disappear, like the soldier), or soldiers speaking to people and then vanishing.

On the campus of Gettysburg College, a Civil War soldier still keeps his sentry duty - and sometimes points his rifle at passing students. He keeps the college security guards busy! Gives new meaning to "college spirit." You can read more about Gettysburg College's ghosts here.

The History of Wedding Customs.

My cousin the firefighter, Ray is marrying his sweetheart, Robin, a real estate agent, today. I thought for fun I’d list some common wedding traditions and where they originally came from.

Engagement rings:  A symbol of true love, and the intent to commit. Originally this little band of gold meant that the bride to be had been purchased from her father, the dowry paid, and it was a warning to back off. She belonged to someone. The French made it romantic in the 16th century by creating the gimmal ring. These rings intertwined and were broken apart, one given to the groom, one to the bride to be. On their wedding day, the groom would take his off and put in on the brides finger, locking the rings back together in a symbol of marriage. With the wedding band, the custom goes back to ancient Egypt, where they placed it on the left hand and third finger, believing the vein in the finger went straight to your heart.

In ancient Rome, they employed a little trickery by putting together a wedding party. They believed that demons wanted to break up the wedding and would target the bride and groom. To prevent this, they developed a wedding party that would dress exactly like the happy couple, in turn tricking the demons and preventing them from targeting the bride and groom. Today, it is custom for the bride to stick her bridesmaids in the ugliest, most garish dresses she can find. Shows like Say yes to the dress, have become popular for just that reason. Ah, how times change. As a side note, bridesmaids and groomsmen were later used as backup if the groom or bride should decide to run away before the nuptials. Getting married wasn’t cheap business, it still isn’t and the bride’s family and the groom’s family always had back up standing by to take the vows. Someone was getting married.

Veils in ancient times were made of heavier cloth that hid the bride’s face. This prevented other men who were in love with the bride from recognizing her and  absconding with her. This also prevented the groom from knowing exactly what he was getting until he sealed the deal. Many a man was tricked with a swap. When the veil was lifted and he went to kiss his bride, sometimes it wasn’t who he thought it to be.

In Jewish tradition, a groom steps on a glass. This symbolizes the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and that he should never forget the hardships his ancestors had to bear.

And the red slipper on the roof? Why that’s like hanging a do not disturb on the door. It means the couple is on their honeymoon and you should leave them alone.

The honey moon. Well, the bride was kidnapped and hidden from her family until they called off the search. The best man’s job was to distract while the groom’s family made off with the goods. While in hiding, the couple would drink a beverage called mead. And you guessed it. It’s made from honey. This custom has not completly gone away. My mother was kidnapped leaving the church and run all over town with the bride's family for a couple hours, while my father and his groomsmen chased after her. Watch your brides, guys. And the best men better be on their toes. Makes me wonder how many people have had this happen to them?

That’s it for today. These are common wedding traditions in the United States. Tell me about some other customs in other countries and their origins.

I’m off to a wedding. Have a great day!

New release - In the Midnight Hour

I've finally let it loose! After more than a year and countless revisions, In the Midnight Hour is finally available on Amazon. Yay! Coincidentally, on the anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg, where the story's set in present day. But with the ghost population outnumbering humans, they're bound to run into one another. Especially in my story!

I am crazy about this cover. And relieved - my approach to technical problems is to just keep clicking until it works, lol. I can't even count the number of times I clicked, but I'm glad I did!

The book video came out pretty well, too, don't you think?

Developing a Series - OR - I'M INSANE

Last year a friend asked me, quite innocently, "Do you write fiction?"

Someday I hope to be able to say "And the rest is history. I now live in my version of Heaven on Earth, write full time, and hang out with people who need bodyguards at conventions."

But that question. Oh, that question. It started me on the path to writing my first novel. A 300 page honker of a book. I pantsed it all the way with no thought of doing anything with it until I realized I was actually going to finish it.

Since then I've worked with three editors on different projects and found out just how hard it is to write for publication. The elimination of the dreaded "was" and "that" and "then" and "could". Blasting passive voice off the page with my mouse in one hand and a hunk of hair in the other.

Recently I conned my editor Rachel Firasek into taking a look at that first novel. A story about vampires, demons, shape shifters, twue wuve, and snark. Lots of snark.

She loved it. Loved it so much she is on board to help me develop it into a series. The fact that the second book in the series is mostly finished (in a rough draft sort of way) helps take some of the pressure off.

But then I stop and think about how much I love to pants my way along. Never plotting much more than a chapter or two at a time, if that. Never making up character bios ahead of time.

And my tummy hurts. There's plenty of material for three or four books. I love the world, the characters, digging in and throwing grenades into the plot lines to see what happens in the aftermath.

But now I'm beginning to realize that I have to do some planning. I must. Otherwise I won't have a clue what happened in previous books or be able to use those events for future books.

Someone get me a spiked cocoa and a blankey. I need to cuddle up and hide from the evil plot monsters.

Surely there's a way for me to plot and plants this thing. I can be a Plantser, I can do this the way I work best. Right?

Are you guys laughing at me?  ;)

Supernatural Saturday was super!

Debbie Beamer of the Mechanicsburg Mystery Book Shop did an amazing job of organizing the Supernatural Saturday event, bringing together some fantastic speakers, and overseeing throughout the day. She was so efficient, buzzing here and there, I thought she might have had a little supernatural help that day. :)

I was invited to participate in a panel, and I'm especially grateful to Deb for including a copy of my paranormal novella, Soul for Sale, in every goody bag! Such a thrill for me! And she was wonderful to let me bring copies of Surfacing, my mermaid fantasy, along as well. It's an incredible high to see people walking around with copies of your books in their hands.

The half-day conference was held at the Holly Inn in Mt. Holly. I've been there a few times before, but never realized the inn had a ghost story of its own. I couldn't find anyone who knew the actual story, so Googled it and found this story, which interestingly enough, is about a soldier in the Civil War. From the orbs in the photo below, it appears he may have attended the conference, too. :)

Kicking off the conference, Mark Nesbitt presented "The Ghosts of Gettysburg: The Evidence." Oh yeah! Exactly what I've been needing. I've been reworking my Gettysburg ghost story I don't know how many times, and always felt it was missing something. So I bought two of Mark's books - his most recent, Civil War Ghost Trails, and The Ghost Hunter's Field Guide (I'm giddy with glee!).

I literally have pages and pages of notes because every session was riveting, but I'll condense for these posts, and I also won't give away too much of what the speakers said. You should really buy their books!

Here's Mark Nesbitt with his latest release, Civil War Ghost Trails, so new he actually hadn't seen the cover until that day. His publisher hurried so he'd have copies to sell. Cool for us!

I live about 20 minutes from Gettysburg. I really should go there more often, but it's in a direction I don't normally travel, and you know how life gets crazy. But now I'm determined. I'd love to go there during the anniversary of the battle in early July, when paranormal activity's supposed to become very active.

Gettysburg's one of the most active haunting sites. Maybe, Mark said, partially due to the 1.6 million visitors each year, whose visits may help hold the spirits there. Any protracted sadness or grieving may hold a spirit to this world.

The battle grew especially intense, and during 24 hours, claimed 35 casualties per minute -- or one every two seconds. That's a huge amount of deaths in one place in a short time. Of the 400 buildings in Gettysburg standing during the Civil War, about 200 of the original structures are still standing, which may also play into the fact that such a large number of spirits remain attached to the town.

About 300 to 1,100 bodies remain unaccounted for - and the lack of a final resting place is another contributing factor to why spirits don't move on.

There are several types of hauntings:

intelligent, during which spirits interact with humans
I read elsewhere that Gettysburg has one of the highest number of intelligent hauntings)

residual, in which events are replayed over and over again as if recorded
for instance, Mark shared one haunting that visitors may catch sight of and think it's a group of reenactors, but it's not! A unit of soldiers will come marching out of the woods, perform maneuvers, and mark back to the wooded area - or else, if interrupted, will simply vanish!

warp, or a tear in the fabric of time, during which present-day people may actually glimpse events of the past
this was one of the creepiest stories - Pennsylvania Hall was used as a hospital during the battle, and surgeons often tossed limbs out the window or piled them up in a gory pyramid. Employees who worked at the Hall in modern times worked late one night, got on the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor, but it took them to the basement instead. The elevator doors opened onto a scene in which people in 1800-era clothes were working in a makeshift hospital. The women pressed the "close" button like mad, but the doors wouldn't budge. An orderly walked by, made contact with the women in a beseeching manner, and then finally the doors closed and they ran to the security guard. Brave souls that they were, they went back down, but the basement was again just a storage room. This event happened at least one other time to another person.  I asked Mark after the session what might have happened if one of those people had stepped off the elevator into another time. It's anyone's guess!

poltergeist - sometimes associated with younger spirits, but can be any energy

Spirits can make themselves known by touch, sight, sound or sometimes smell. Mark played a chilling recording in which a woman visited Iverson's Pits, and said a blessing before leaving. The answer? A man's scream. I still have goosebumps from that one.

Electronic Voice Phenomenon, or EVP, captures sounds the human ear can't hear in real time, but when you play it back, you can hear the all-too-accurate responses to the questions you ask. (I need to buy a tape recorder.)

There was much more, but I won't give too much away. Mark has written several books detailing accounts of hauntings. I bought a few of these books (novellas, really) years ago, so can truthfully say they're well worth a read if you love true ghost stories.

The Ghosts of Gettysburg ghost tours are spooky fun. Check out this link, and if you can't visit, you can download a virtual walking tour.
You can find Mark's books at the same site, as well as another presenter's, Patty Wilson. I can't wait to share her session. Everyone there was riveted during her talk, and you could literally hear a pin drop.

I'll share some of Patty Wilson's session next time, so stay tuned. You'll want to keep the lights on at night afterward!

Special thanks to Diane DeLucca Appelt for two of the photos.

Finale. Sweet, Sad and (almost) Sane

The main reason I've been MIA for quite some time on this blog is thanks to the worst holiday ever for a full time florist (Mother's Day)...ok, ok. The real reason just went live a few hours ago.
The last book in my Earth-based sci-fi suspense series is--finally!--out there. I feel thrilled, relieved, grateful, regretful and...somewhat empty. It's all good.

Hi, I'm Kenra Daniels

Yup, new kid. At the risk of sounding all fan-girly, I'm insanely excited to be here!

I write paranormal romance, erotic romance, and a little horror, as well as having ambitious plans for a YA fantasy series, paranormal historicals, and whatever else I can get by with.

Currently, I'm actively working on a paranormal romance series with weredragons and daywalking vampires as the Hero and Heroine. One is within days of being ready to submit, 3 are in various drafts, and several others are in different stages of outlining.

I'm also building an entirely new paranormal creature from the ground up, working on its evolutionary history now. It will be the foundation of a pretty extensive paranormal series. I'd love to share details with you, but until I have it ready to walk off the page, I'm keeping it under tight wraps, just to be safe.

In the future, (sooner rather than later, I hope!) I anticipate having many covers to unveil and releases to celebrate with everyone here.

And now, the house is all quiet! Time to get back to work...

I love you. Niall is in hiding, but not from the police. He’s trapped between the world he longs for and a place he can’t leave behind. Cursed to hold his tongue, unable to claim what he wants until it’s given, he’s allowed one year to capture his heart's desire. But speaking those three simple words, the most important words in his life, might very well kill him.

I can’t love you. As a private investigator, Taylor walks daily through the ashes of love burned out. He’s witnessed the aftermath of love—destroyed marriages and wrecked lives that leave behind nothing but bitter memories of betrayal. He’s convinced that love will never plant a seed in his heart—until Niall sparks a completely unexpected reaction in both mind and body.

I want to love you
. Roo has spent her entire life bouncing from relationship to relationship, offering her heart only to get it trampled on. When she finds herself out in the cold again, she discovers love can come from the most surprising of places. Her choices are simple. Do the right thing. Do the wrong thing. Do nothing. The wrong choice could be simply devastating…

Product Warnings
Beware faeries with killer tattoos and girls dressed as chickens—broken hearts can follow… Or lots of love. And lots of sex—three-way, two-way, every which way. But no chicken sex. Thank god.

New release - gay erotica

I would like to announce the release of my new gay erotic romance title "Napolean Guns and Burning Kisses".
Blurb: Taken as a child from the streets by Gaetano, a Siledian Mafia boss, Idun is now his slave and bodyguard. After a shooting gone wrong, the boss sends Idun to an exclusive resort to recover from his injuries. But Idun knows that when the boss shows kindness, he should be very afraid... Celestin works against human trafficking, after escaping the bonds of slavery early in his life. When he’s assigned the rescue of Idun, he never imagines he will fall for his charge... This is a game of cat and mouse, where nobody's who they seem. Will Idun and Celestin find trust in each other, and will they fight back to back, when the battle begins?

Hi, I'm Jennifer James

And yeah, I'm new here. And I'm also rather Squee! excited about it.

The last few months have been rather crazy for me, landing my first two publishing contracts with Decadent Publishing, finding myself being asked to write guest posts on blogs, and getting to know some of the coolest people on the planet.

Who are these super cool people? Authors. yeah, I'm a geek for words and chatting with other authors gets me completely stoked. They're my rock stars. Probably why I like to write. :)

I write pretty much every sub-genre of romance, from PNR to UF to Contemporary to Western to full bore Erotica.

My first release with Decadent is called LOVE KINECTION, it's a contemporary filled with geek references and jokes and sexual tension.

I also recently contracted with Decadent in their line The Edge, my short BDSM erotica piece called MARKED. That's about Jack and Kayla, two werewolves who are meant to be together. Kayla took off and left poor Jack for five years while she figured out what she was running away from. But she's returned to him and is ready to make the ultimate commitment. And no, I don't mean marriage. This goes deeper than that. :)

Right now I'm working actively on two pieces, one is a contemporary western with paranormal elements (ie. two ghosts who are determined to help foster some lovin' between the hero and heroine.) and a novella with a heroine who has the ability to blend into her background chameleon style and a hero who happens to be a police detective. He can see the heroine when she uses her ability. No one else can, which is good for her since it only works if she's naked. (Yep, she's gotta be au naturel)  How does he do this magic? Well, you'll have to wait and see.

So, what are you reading currently? Are the vampire/werewolf markets saturated or is there always room for one more like a Lay's potato chip? How about ghosts? Too scary/cheesy/there's nothing left in that after Paranormal Activity?
